TRUCKING INDUSTRY NEWS * USA - ABF Says Teamsters Suggested Buyout of YRC

Potential for acquisition arose in talks earlier this year, ABF says

Fort Smith,ARK,USA -The Journal of Commerce Online, by William B. Cassidy -Dec 6, 2010: -- The Teamsters union at one point pressured ABF Freight System to buy ailing rival YRC Worldwide, ABF Freight System revealed on a company Web site...  Teamster negotiators put a potential acquisition on the table in talks with ABF earlier this year, the less-than-truckload carrier said on abflegalaction.com...   The Teamsters National Freight Industry Negotiating Committee is the bargaining group representing Teamster union members in the LTL trucking industry...  Teamster representatives were not immediately available for comment...   ABF is suing three YRC Worldwide subsidiaries and the Teamsters union for allegedly violating the 2008 National Master Freight Agreement...   The nation's fifth largest LTL carrier says its larger rival YRC and the Teamsters violated the NMFA by negotiating "side agreements" without ABF...   A federal court will hear arguments for dismissing the ABF suit Dec. 16....   ABF laid out its arguments in the lawsuit in the Frequently Asked Questions section of abflegalaction.com, a Web site dedicated to the legal challenge...   The company also portrayed its attempt to win concessions from its Teamsters earlier this year as part of an attempt to settle legal claims and avoid a lawsuit... * Florida - Vigillo to offer truckers insight into their CSA scores

Ft. Lauderdale,FL,USA -Fleet Owner -Dec 6, 2010: -- A new scorecard from Vigillo will offer individual truck drivers a look into their current CSA scores. The offering, Roadside Resume, will be available later this month... While fleets are focused on the implementation of the Compliance Safety Accountability (CSA) program – formerly known as the Comprehensive Safety Analysis 2010 (CSA 2010) program--, set to take effect on Dec. 12, driver violations will remain on a fleet’s record for two years. Some fleets will be allowing their individual drivers to see their driver scores... Roadside Resume is a free scorecard based on three years of violation history and up to five current and past CDL numbers. The database will include information from carriers that are Vigillo CSA Scorecard subscribers or from the newly created category of affiliate members of the Vigillo Network, companies that have elected to provide this information...


* Mississippi - System Weighs Trucks at Full Speed

Jackson,MISS,USA -the Clarion-Ledger/Transport Topics -6 Dec 2010: -- The Mississippi Department of Transportation is testing a system that allows officials to weigh commercial vehicles while they're traveling at full speed, newspaper reported...  The system can reduce the number of vehicles stopped for inspection by 20% to 30%, it also checks driving records and credentials against databases...   The Smart Roadside System is currently being used at Orange Grove, a weigh station near Moss Point on Interstate 10. It is housed in a van, and uses infrared cameras, weight-in-motion sensors and other technology for inspections...  Officials hope to install the system at all weigh stations in the state, but there is no timetable for the rollout. * Ohio - FedEx to cut more than 200 Ohio jobs

West Chester,OH,USA -The Associated Press/The Miami Herald -30 Nov 2010: -- FedEx Corp. has said more than 200 jobs will be cut when it closes a shipping terminal in southwest Ohio in January... FedEx spokeswoman, Ann Saccomano, said Tuesday that the company will close its National LTL facility in West Chester north of Cincinnati on Jan. 29. She says the 222 employees losing jobs were notified... The closing is part of the Memphis, Tenn.-based company's integration of its short-haul and long-haul freight pickup and delivery networks announced in September. Saccomano says the networks were operating independently and about 100 facilities that overlapped will close... She add, some employees are expected to find other FedEx jobs and there will be no interruption in customer service... * Tennessee - FedEx to Raise Ground Rates 4.9%

Memphis,TENN,USA -Transport Topics -3 Dec 2010: -- FedEx Corp. said it would raise shipping rates for its Ground and Home Delivery units by a net average of 4.9%, effective Jan. 3...  Rates will actually increase an average of 5.9%, but FedEx will also adjust the threshold at which the fuel surcharge begins, reducing it by one percentage point, the carrier said Friday in a statement...  FedEx announced in September that it would increase rates in its Freight and National LTL units 6.9%, and its Express unit by 3.9%, on average...

* FedEx to Deliver More than 223 Million Packages During Holiday Season


New York,NY,USA -FedEx (PR) -Dec. 2, 2010: -- FedEx Corp. expects to see its busiest day in company history when it moves almost 16 million shipments around the world on December 13. This is a more than 12 percent increase from last year's busiest day when the company handled 14.2 million shipments. For the overall holiday season, FedEx is expecting a total volume increase of approximately 11 percent compared to 2009. FedEx forecasts more than 223.3 million shipments will move through its global networks between Thanksgiving and Christmas...


* Ohio -  Continental Express Buys Carolina Refrigerated

Sidney,OH,USA -The Journal of Commerce Online William B. Cassidy -Dec 6, 2010: -- Acquisition expands Midwest truckload carrier's next-day reach in Southeast... Midwestern truckload carrier Continental Express is expanding in the Southeastern U.S. by purchasing Carolina Refrigerated, Gaffney, S.C... The acquisition puts Continental trucks within a day of markets as far south as Miami, said Russell L. Gottemoeller, president of the carrier... Continental hopes to get that high level of growth by dedicating resources to the smaller South Carolina operation... Continental primarily operates in a regional market centered on Ohio, hauling into Illinois in the West and Pennsylvania in the East and into the Southeast...
