Skoda will be launching a new Octavia in January 2009 with an extensive exterior and interior facelift, bringing the hugely successful model up to date with the brand’s current range.

Warren Richards, Product Marketing Manager at Skoda, said: “The new Octavia is a thoroughly contemporary car which sits perfectly within our current range. As well as modernised looks, it features a whole host of new features that will appeal to today’s car buyers.”

FPV Ute Car Reviews And News Ud Upates

Ford's supercharged V8 ute is a beast… But one that needs taming
Ford Performance Vehicles (FPV) today launched an exciting new model Series aimed at broadening its appeal to Australia's automotive enthusiasts.
Named in tribute to a fondly-remembered Ford from the late '60s, the new GS sedan and GS Ute are unique limited-edition models offering buyers entry to the FPV family at a very competitive price point.

FPV's GS sedan and Ute are individually-speced to provide a combination of GT-based 302kW V8 engine performance, FPV chassis enhancements, bespoke GS graphics and FPV driver comfort features.

Available in limited numbers, the new FPV GS Series models hark back to the original Falcon GS of 30 years ago, introduced with the XW-model of 1969 and now the second most collectible Ford Falcon behind the GT.
"GS is another iconic badge in Ford's family history in this country," FPV General Manager Rod Barrett said.

"Our aim was to develop a model that provides the performance, prestige and individuality that is a signature of the FPV brand, with its own identifiable model personality, and all at a great price.
"We've achieved all of that and expect the new GS Series models will find their own place in Australian performance motoring folklore."

Developed specifically for the GS Series, the recalibrated FPV 5.4 litre V8 GT engine from the FG-model now produces 302kW of power and 551Nm of torque, driving through a standard six-speed manual transmission.

FPV's engineers have given the GS Series engine the twin throttle bodies and intake system of the GT engine, the GT headers and dual exhaust and a recalibrated ECU, all fine-tuned in an engine development program specific to the GS Series.
"We aimed to provide the GS Series owner with a GT driving experience with this engine … at 302kW it's the perfect entry to our range, which steps up to the turbocharged F6 at 310kW and the full GT-spec V8 at 315kW," Rod Barrett said.

Every FPV GS Series also comes standard with unique GS striping graphics, charcoal cloth interior, FPV GT instrumentation, gear knob, starter button and badging, premium sound system with iPod® and Bluetooth® integration, and dual zone climate control.
There's also '302' graphics on the GS sedan's rear spoiler.

The GS sedan also features 19in Graphite rims and a choice of six exterior colour/stripe combinations, while the GS Ute features 19in Alpine Silver rims, FPV soft tonneau and a choice of three exterior colour/stripe combinations.
Like its namesake from three decades ago, the new FPV GS Series offers a long list of options that include a FPV-spec 4-pot Brembo brake upgrade, a six-speed auto transmission recalibrated specifically for the GS' 302kW engine, leather seats and sat-nav, and, on the Ute only, a hard tonneau with spoiler.

"We have also given the major design elements of the original GS logo a modern interpretation, which adds to the distinctive styling of the GS sedan and Ute," Rod Barrett said.
Production of the GS Series is limited to 250 sedans and 75 Utes.

FALCON GS HISTORY
First introduced just over 30 years ago, the Falcon GS was an option pack offered as an 'affordable' and lower-spec alternative to the Falcon GT.
Launched in July 1969 with the then-new XW Falcon range, the GS was an option pack available to dress up the base Falcon and higher-spec Futura models. It continued in the subsequent XY and XA models.
In its initial XW-model guise, the GS option pack added 'rally stripes' to the flanks of the bold new bodywork, chrome-finish full wheel covers, GT-spec instrumentation and three-spoke 'rim blow' sports steering wheel. Later GS packs included other options on the XY and XA models.

Many GS owners along the way also added further options to 'personalise' their cars like bucket seats, centre console, disc brakes, wider tyres, power steering and even the 302 ci Windsor V8.
Today, the GS is fondly remembered by enthusiasts for its mix of sporty good looks and luxury appointments, its rarity and its value as an alternative to the Falcon GT.

Wiesmann Roadster MF3 Review,Specs,And Wallpapers

The Wiesmann Roadster MF3 : Official PR

There are plenty of sporty cars, but sports cars for individualists are a rarity. There is a particular scarcity of sports cars of the sort that can boast not only a great deal of driving pleasure but also exclusive craftsmanship and a classic design. This exclusive group certainly includes the Roadster from Wiesmann.

The body of the Wiesmann Roadster has captivatingly distinct, curved lines and an unmistakeable face. The reason for that is certainly because design at Wiesmann is not created in the wind tunnel, but in the hearts and minds of genuine enthusiasts. The Roadster's fabric hood with its folding frame is produced to a particularly high degree of precision. It is made to measure and perfectly matched to the vehicle. After all, journeys with the hood up and at high speed should also be fun. Despite that it only takes a few seconds to open and is covered with a tonneau cover, so that you can enjoy every moment of sunshine.

The Roadster's engine technology comes from the BMW stable. The powerful BMW engines are well known for their agility and sporty pretensions, and provide impressive performance in the Wiesmann Roadster. The combination of the vehicle's low weight and the tremendous performance potential of the inline 6-cylinder engine results in unmatched driving dynamics.

The engine delivers 252 kW / 343 hp from 3,246 cc.

With its powerful elegance, the Wiesmann Roadster stands above all for rapid acceleration. With 343 hp, maximum torque of 365 Nm and a power-to-weight ratio of 3.44 g/hp, it sprints from a standstill to 100 km/h in just 4.9 seconds. And with a top speed of 255 km/h, pure driving pleasure is guaranteed. It is enhanced to the point of perfection by a 6-speed sequential gearbox.

As for the body of the Roadster, it is produced from high-quality, glass fibre reinforced composite material. Under the body, the hot-dip galvanised space frame chassis with tremendous torsional rigidity also contributes to the vehicle's safety. It is aluminium-panelled and equipped with sturdy side-impact protection, a unique detail in the automotive landscape. An additional bonus of this safety-conscious construction method: "rust" simply does not figure in the vocabulary at Wiesmann.

The Wiesmann Roadster was first built in 1993 and has been continuously further developed in subsequent years. Over 680 Roadsters have now been produced and a build quality has been achieved that is unequalled in this day and age. There has been a wide range of detailed visual and technical modifications undertaken in recent years. However, the classic design has not been changed in the process. Instead, continuous upgrading of the interior and modest changes to the external appearance of the Roadster contribute to the fascinating further development of the vehicle design.

Urban congestion * USA - D.C. area co-leads nation in traffic congestion

Search nation's largest urban areas to see commuters' yearly delays, excess fuel and congestion costs

Washington,DC,USA -The Washington Post, by Ashley Halsey III -January 20, 2011: ... The number of drivers in the Washington region who say they frequently feel uncontrollable anger toward another driver has doubled in the past five years, according to a Washington Post poll taken last year. Almost a third of drivers said they're overcome with that wild rage from time to time... One reason for that boiling frustration is contained in a report released Thursday, which found that Washington ranks first in the nation when it comes to hours wasted stuck in traffic... The most sophisticated number crunching done on traffic congestion says the average Washington area driver loses 70 hours a year - almost three full days - crawling along in traffic, tying the region with Chicago for worst in the country. Los Angeles, the perennial king of congestion, comes in third, with 63 blown hours... The news came in the annual national traffic survey done by the Texas Transportation Institute, a highly regarded research group based at Texas A&M University... TECHNONEWS * USA - ‘Talking’ Cars that Could Save Your Life

It's called Intellidrive

(Video from CNBC: Covering the auto industry I've seen some amazing technology over the years, but the latest crash avoidance system I tested in Detroit last week ranks among the most fascinating)

Detroit,MICH,USA -CNBC, by Phil LeBeau -25 Jan 2011: -- Using technology developed over the last nine years by a dozen major automakers working in conjunction with the federal government, Intellidrive basically revolves around cars "talking" to each other... Cars using GPS receivers and WiFi signals are constantly sending out data about their location and speed. As those signals bounce off other cars on the road or traffic signals at intersections, your car warns you when you are about to crash... The scenarios where Intellidrive works to keep you from crashing are varied... When I tested it, I was at a blind intersection and couldn't see a car approaching at roughly 35 miles per hour... Just as I was about to turn into the path of the oncoming car, Intellidrive warned me to slam on the brakes. Within a split second the system saved me from being sideswiped... Make no mistake, the "talking" car is coming. It will like be 6-7 years before Intellidrive is standard on all new cars, but it's coming...

* Maritime piracy costs global community up to $12 billion a year

(Video from YouTube, by bartamaha -18 April 2009)
London,UK -One Earth Future Foundation/Oceans Beyond Piracy/Eye for Transport, by Sharon Gill -Jan 20, 2011: -- At the end of 2010, around 500 seafarers from more than eighteen countries were being held hostage by pirates. During the same year, around $238 million was paid in ransoms to Somali pirates. Piracy doesn't only affect the world's largest trade transport industry; it actually costs the global community a lot more than just ransoms and stolen cargo...  Despite more than thirty countries (including the US) contributing to the navies patrolling the trade lanes around the Horn of Africa, pirates operating in the waters off the coast of Somalia are still doing a roaring trade. The pirates doubled the number of attacks and expanded their playground, so the actual number of successful hijackings increased...  Furthermore, hijacked vessels are reportedly being used as "mother ships". This not only enables the pirates to expand their operating area, but also gives them some degree of protection since a naval vessel would hesitate to fire on pirates aboard a ship full of crude oil...   OBP says that, between 2004-2009, only 15% of global piracy attacks occurred off the coast of Somalia. But in 2009, Somali pirates were responsible for 53% of reported attacks around the world, including 47 hijacked vessels and 867 seafarers held hostage...  The One Earth Future Foundation says that the scourge of piracy will continue to increase because there is no effective international system to deal with the problem...

The crew of the ship comes from Poland, Ukraine, Russia and the Philippines, the company said... The Beluga Nomination, built in 2006, is a 9,821 deadweight-ton, multipurpose heavy-lift project-cargo vessel... The ship "is in severe distress and danger," said Beluga, which transports heavy-lift project cargo for the offshore oil and gas industry and to sea-based wind-energy projects... The crew was able to flee to a security room within the ship when the pirates attacked. Their captors eventually managed to break into the room and take control of the ship, which is now sailing toward Somalia, Beluga said...

* South Korea - Korea Line Files for Bankruptcy. Shipping line suffered losses after economic turndown

Seoul,S.Korea -The Journal of Commerce Online, by Peter T. Leach -Jan 26, 2011: -- Korea Line filed for a court receivership on Tuesday in the wake of losses caused by the global oversupply of bulk vessels and low freight rates...  The shipping line, South Korea's second-largest bulk-carrying line, suffered losses during the past two years after the shipping was hit by a global economic downturn...  Other local rivals such as STX Pan Ocean and Hanjin Shipping posted operating profits last year, but Korea Line continued to suffer losses as it had to pay lease fees on chartered ships...(

Mexican Trucks * USA - Can not meet EPA standards

..."in part because low sulfur diesel fuel is not available in Mexico"

Mexico City,DF,MEX -Fleet Owner, by Brian Straight -January 24, 2011: -- While the U.S. has offered up a preliminary document that it says will satisfy its requirements under NAFTA to allow Mexican trucks to operate inside the borders of this country, the head of Mexico’s largest trucking association says not so fast... Speaking to reporters after meeting with Mexico’s transportation secretary, Juan Carlos Muñoz, president of National Chamber of Motor Transport of Freight, said that Mexican trucks would be unable to meet EPA environmental standards ... Oil companies in Mexico “do not have sufficient capacity to supply the diesel suitable for these new technologies,” Muñoz said... That, if true, should alleviate fears of many in this country and could be a major sticking point as U.S. and Mexican negotiators debate the fine points of any new program... TRUCKING INDUSTRY * UK - Fleets re-examine funding methods

London,UK -Fleet News -24 Jan 2011: -- A number of fleets have already changed or are looking to change the way they fund their vehicles to ensure they’re still getting the best value for money... The increase in VAT from 17.5% to 20%, a reduction in capital allowances and proposed new accountancy rules are all having an impact...
