Hiller -14 December 2010: -- New figures from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) indicate that highway fatalities and injuries are on the decline. Still more than 2.2 million people were injured and 33,808 died on America's roadways. Many of these human losses were the direct result of general and commercial vehicle accidents. As a result, several federal agencies, the trucking industry and other organizations have joined together to make our nation's roads safer. Each October, these stakeholders, along with the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA), take part in the Operation Safe Driver campaign... Launched in 2007, Operation Safe Driver is an initiative developed to combat the staggering number of deaths related to commercial truck, bus, and passenger vehicle crashes. The campaign is an international effort. As part of the annual campaign, several activities are held across the United States, Canada and Mexico. The main goal for Operation Safe Driver is to increase enforcement of safety belt laws, improve driver roadside inspections, enforce traffic and regulatory compliance, as well as implement driver education and awareness programs...
