Must all Subarus have quirky styling? One look at the redesigned 2012 Subaru Impreza compact sedan and hatchback suggests the answer is no. Accompanying substantial improvements in fuel economy, the fresh styling alone might win the least expensive Subaru in the U.S. new customers.
Refreshing or Revolting: 2012 Subaru Impreza imageMore chiseled styling starts in the front with the new grille and a horizontal chrome bar drawing your eye to the blue Subaru badge. A more aggressive lower fascia and more complex headlights that are no longer directly connected to the grille.
Boldly flared wheel wells are new on the 2012 model and the side mirrors are now mounted on the doors. The small side windows behind the rear doors on the outgoing Impreza are gone.
In the back, restyled taillights and a pronounced edge to the trunklid are the big changes. As for the Subaru Impreza Sport, the hatchback model appears to have dropped the two-tone exterior color on the outgoing car. The larger, clear taillights on the 2011 Subaru pictured below have been replaced by smaller, red-colored units.
Inside, the central air vents have moved toward the top of the dashboard. There’s nothing out of the ordinary in the conventionally designed interior.
