One more state offers a permit that allows them to drive, but not use the license as an ID. In these and other states, lawmakers are discussing legislation that would change licensing rules... In recent years, the list of states providing driver’s licenses for illegal immigrants has dropped from nine to two – New Mexico and Washington. In Utah, illegal immigrants can obtain licenses to drive but they cannot use the licenses as identification... The Alaska House approved a bill that would link driver’s licenses to residency. As is the case in 30 states, HB3 would tie a driver’s license validity to the duration of a person’s authorized residency in the U.S... An Oregon bill would return illegal immigrants’ right to drive.
