Noel Perry, a consultant with FTR Associates, noted that the industry expects a shortage of about 150,000 drivers by the end of this year, and as much as 400,000 by 2012... Mike Hinz, vice president of driver recruiting at Schneider Training Academy in Wisconsin, agreed... For the unemployed, trucking can be a good option. Drivers can make $40,000 to $80,000 annually and companies say that demand for quality drivers is increasing... But the high turnover rate for truck drivers is partially due to its notoriously difficult work conditions: Drivers often need to spend long hours on the road away from family...
* Indiana: Looking for 2,000 new drivers as economy improves
Indianapolis,IND,USA -The Indianapolis Star/Today's Trucking (CAN) -14 March 2011: -- About 2,000 new truck-driving jobs will open in Indiana in 2011... Interviewed transportation experts and major players in the industry, says economic gains and the retirement of baby-boomer truckers are key factors driving the need for more drivers this year... It said the average trucker earns US$37,588 a year... Gary Langston, president of the Indiana Motor Truck Association, said more drivers will be needed to haul consumer goods this year... Indianapolis-based Celadon, which has 3,000 trailers and 9,000 trailers, expects to hire about 100 drivers this year. The company’s founder and chief executive Steve Russell says the economic difficulties of the past couple of years have driven some smaller truck companies out of business, leading to “a competitive shortage in the industry” ...
