QUAIN -January 28, 2011: -- Computers, smartphones can be upgraded w/ new software, apps, peripherals...   So engineers are thinking of ways to design vehicles that can be upgraded. Looking at everything electronic, including navigation, brake systems, entertainment... Advances moving so fast that even Internet-based upgrades could be obsolete soon... Question is who will manage upgrades as vehicle becomes part of network. Automakers taking different paths, using 3rd parties or developing technology in house... Experts say upgrading via telematics would save owners trips to dealer. Could reprogram transmission settings or recalibrate brake system... New functions could be added like vehicle-to-vehicle collision warnings...
