Although the 2011 BMW 5-Series sports numerous enhancements — including two new engines and a new transmission — over the previous incarnation car, BMW actually lowered the prices on the 535i and 550i sedan models. The 535i now starts at $50,475 and the 550i opens at $60,575.The new 535i eschews the current twin-turbo 3.0-liter inline-six, dubbed the N54, for BMW’s new dual-scroll single-turbo 3.0-liter inline-six, the N55. It also comes with either the new ZF eight-speed automatic or a six-speed manual. The new car possesses a few of BMW’s EfficientDynamics pieces, including electric power steering, regenerative braking, and on-demand operation of engine accessory drives. Despite these changes and additional features, the new 535i is $1650 cheaper than the outgoing 535i — $50,475 versus $52,125.In 550i guise, the 5-Series receives a 4.4-liter twin-turbo V-8 as seen in the 750i and 550i GT. Like the 535i, it gets the eight-speed automatic or six-speed manual. It also includes all the same EfficientDynamics features as the 535i to improve fuel economy. For 2011, the 550i also sports a slightly reduced pricetag, down from $61,475 to $60,575 including destination and handling.Interestingly for the new 2011 model, no M Sport package will be available (when the car launches at least). The sport package is still available though at a cost of $2200 on both the 535i and 550i — a $700 reduction in price. Included in the sport package are driving dynamics control, electronic damper control, and active roll stabilization. Two other sporty options are available as well, including a $2700 dynamic handling package (BMW has not released specifics on how this is different from the sport package) and a sport-tuned version of the eight-speed automatic for $500.Of course there are also luxury options available, including active ventilated seats ($2950), a cold weather package ($1050) that includes a heated steering wheel, heated seats, and headlight washers, and a new convenience package ($1700) that BMW gives no specifics on. Two premium packages are also available; the first is standard on the up-level 550i and $1800 on the 535i while the second is $4900 on the 535i and $2800 on the 550i. Numerous other standalone options are available as well.An entry level 528i with the normally aspirated 3.0-liter inline-six will also be available but pricing has not yet been released. The 2011 BMW 5-Series will make its North American debut at the New York auto show next week and hits dealerships this June.Source: BMW
